Little Yogis: Kids Yoga Classes in Sandgate for toddlers & their grown-ups

A playful introduction to yoga for little ones aged 2–4, with a grown-up by their side.
Starting something new with a toddler can sometimes feel like a bit of a gamble!
Will they join in?
Will they sit still?
Will they do the activity?
Will they suddenly decide they'd rather lie underneath the chair/on the floor etc?
The answer to all of these is: possibly!
And that's exactly why Little Yogis isn't designed like a traditional yoga class.
It's a playful, relaxed introduction to yoga for children aged 2–4 and their grown-up, where the two of you get to explore movement, imagination and mindfulness together. This autumn, Little Yogis is coming to St Paul's Church Hall in Sandgate.

Yoga, but make it playful
At this age, children learn through play. So instead of expecting little ones to stand or sit in a perfect yoga pose for 30 seconds, we'll be moving, pretending, singing, exploring and having fun.
A tree pose might actually involve becoming a tree.
A downward dog might lead us into a game.
A breathing exercise might involve pretending to smell a flower.
Stories and songs can take us on little adventures, with yoga poses woven naturally into the experience. The aim isn't to teach little kids a set of yoga postures. It's to help them discover how good it can feel to move, stretch, breathe and relax.
Why practise with a grown-up?
At Little Yogis, children and their grown-ups share the mat. And there's something lovely about that. Rather than dropping your child off and coming back later, you get to be part of the experience.
You might practise a pose together, help your child balance, join in with a game or song or simply watch them explore. It's an opportunity to connect without the usual distractions of home life.
No rushing to get somewhere.
No screens.
No jobs to do.
Just 45 minutes together.
Supporting growing bodies
Preschoolers are constantly developing their balance, coordination and awareness of their bodies. Yoga gives them lots of opportunities to explore these things through playful movement.
They can practise balancing, stretching, twisting, reaching, crawling and moving in different ways, helping them develop confidence and body awareness.
And because every child is different, there's no expectation that they will all move in the same way.
Some children might enthusiastically join everything. Others might watch for half the class before deciding they'd like to have a go. Both are completely fine.
Learning about feelings
Little children have some very big feelings. Yoga doesn't make those feelings disappear, nor should it! Instead, it can give children simple experiences of noticing how their bodies feel when they're excited, tired, frustrated or calm.
We might explore breathing, relaxation and simple mindfulness through games and stories, introducing ideas that children can gradually begin to recognise in everyday life. The grown-up gets to learn alongside them too.
Kids Yoga Classes in Sandgate = A gentle introduction to community
Little Yogis is also about creating a small, friendly community for families in Sandgate. Coming along each week means children can begin to recognise familiar faces, while grown-ups have an opportunity to meet other local parents and carers. There's no pressure to be social or to join in perfectly. It's simply a welcoming space to come together.

What can you expect?
Each session will be a little different, but we'll usually include a mixture of:
playful yoga poses
movement and simple sequences
yoga games
songs and stories
breathing activities
mindfulness
balance and coordination
partner activities
relaxation
The sessions are 45 minutes, but only about 30 of those will be the actual class giving little ones enough time to explore without asking too much of their attention span. And allowing plenty of time to arrive, settle, use the loo! And time after to enjoy a cuppa and natter, use the loo (again!) and leave unrushed.

Do we need to know anything about yoga?
Absolutely not!
You don't need to be a yoga person.
Your child doesn't need to have tried yoga before.
You don't need to be flexible.
And nobody is expected to perform the poses perfectly.
Come in comfortable clothes, bring yourselves and be ready to play.
Little Yogis in Sandgate
Little Yogis takes place at St Paul’s Church Hall in Sandgate on Thursday mornings at 10:30am. Each term runs for six weeks alongside the school term, with current dates available on the booking page.
The class is designed for preschoolers aged 2–4 and one grown-up, with children and adults practising together on the mat through playful movement, yoga, games, songs, stories, breathing and relaxation.
There are a limited number of parking spaces at the church available for class participants, and the hall has step-free access, making it easy to bring buggies along.
Pre-crawling babies are very welcome too and can join the class free of charge. If your baby is likely to sleep through the session, they can stay comfortably in their buggy, or you’re welcome to bring a blanket so they can lie alongside you while you practise.
It's a chance to move, connect, play and introduce your little one to some simple tools for movement, breathing and relaxation.
If you're looking for a gentle activity to share with your child, we'd love you to join us.
Come as you are.
Wiggles welcome.
