Creative Winter Fun & Sustainable Christmas Crafts for Kids

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas! I know I may be getting a little over excited, but I love this time of year and the thought of all that's to come... I think I may even be more excited than Solly! So here goes with my first mention, don't hate me for going early!...

There’s so much magic around Christmas, especially with the kids. Twinkly lights, chilly walks, hot chocolate stops, and the smell of pine, cheese and wine in the air! It’s the perfect time to get outdoors, and Folkestone provides, so gather some natural treasures, and lets turn them into handmade festive creations. Here are a few easy, sustainable Christmas crafts for kids, cheekymono style!

I've pinned this easy craft from Tara at Feels Like Home and will be collecting up cones to make some cute little decs with the kids

🦌 Fir Cone Reindeers from the Lower Leas Coastal Park

Wrap up warm and head down to the Lower Leas Coastal Park for a winter wander. Collect a few fallen fir cones, they make the perfect base for your own mini reindeers! Add some twig or pipe cleaner antlers, googly eyes, and a red pom-pom nose, and you’ve got yourself a whole herd of festive friends.

It’s such a simple, joyful way to connect with nature and bring a bit of the outdoors inside.

Sea glass Christmas crafts made with recycled materials collected from the Warren beach in Folkestone
Me and kids have been obsessed with collecting sea glass from The Warren beach since we moved here in 2024, and now we have the best idea from Jo at Bella & Barley Craft of how to put it to use..... sea glass decorations and cards

Sea Glass Christmas Cards & Tree Decorations

If you’re lucky enough to find a bit of sea glass along The Warren on your coastal walks, don’t let it go to waste! These frosty gems make beautiful additions to handmade Christmas cards or mini hanging Christmas scenes. Create sea-glass snowmen, Christmas trees, robins or wintery abstract patterns, perfect to gift to friends and family or display on your tree or mantle. Each piece is completely unique, just like the sea-smoothed treasures you’ve collected. I've been busy making some of these myself and will be selling them at my Christmas Market..... more on that another time!

🎅 Junk Modelling Christmas Creations

Keep that recycling craft box going strong through winter! We love turning cardboard tubes and yoghurt pots into festive fun.

  • Make Santa or snowman puppets with felt offcuts, paper scraps, and string.

  • Create candy cane or star bunting from old cereal boxes, painted and threaded together.

  • Or use old wrapping paper and fabric scraps to make garlands for the tree.

It’s a brilliant way to reuse what you already have, save money, and let little imaginations run wild. And if you haven’t already, try keeping a seasonal craft box — fill it with coloured papers, ribbons, and recycled bits in winter shades: red, white, silver, green. Pack it away with your Christmas decorations, ready to bring out again next year.
